Thanks to the notoriously frigid winters in Chicago, IL, it’s important to keep your furnace in top shape. One of the clearest signs that something is wrong with your unit is if it starts making strange noises. Here are three noises your furnace might make that should especially concern you.
1. Clicking
It’s normal to hear some clicking for a short while after your furnace starts up, but if you hear this sound persistently throughout the heating cycle, you probably have some reason to fret. The most common explanation for this noise is some type of ignition-related failure. A dirty burner, damaged flame sensor or defective ignition board may each keep the furnace from igniting properly and generate a clicking noise.
Sometimes, a faulty compressor or fan motor can also produce this noise. To get to the bottom of everything, you’ll have to request the services of a trained HVAC technician.
2. Rattling
The simplest explanation for a rattling noise coming from your furnace is a loose panel door. Less commonly, you may have a cracked heat exchanger, which would put you at risk of experiencing a carbon monoxide leak. If you hear this sound, have a professional shut down your unit, tighten all loose screws and then examine the heat exchanger.
3. Humming or Buzzing
It’s normal for a quiet hum to come from your furnace. When the sound becomes loud, though, you may have anything from a loose screw or door to a faulty motor on your hands. Maintenance can take care of the former two issues, but a faulty motor will probably call for more extensive repairs.
