Heat pumps should operate quietly, producing a gentle hum. However, when your heat pump suddenly starts making odd, loud noises, you have cause for concern. Learn what noises heat pumps may suddenly produce and what those sounds may signify.
1. Gurgling and Bubbling
Heat pumps rely on refrigerant to transfer warm air from one space to another. When gurgling or bubbling sounds occur during operation, it can be a sign that the heat pump is leaking refrigerant. This situation reduces the heat pump’s efficiency and can cause further damage to the unit.
2. Metallic Clanging
If you hear metal hitting metal, shut off your heat pump. Then, inspect it for loose parts that may shift around when the fan blades are running. Your heat pump may need a preventive maintenance visit from one of our technicians who can readily solve the issue.
3. Excessive Rattling or Vibration
