3 Ways to Prepare Your HVAC System for Fall in the Great Lakes Region

family preparing for fall in the Great Lakes region of Chicago

The seasons are changing in Chicago, IL, and the surrounding areas, which means it’s time to prepare your heating and cooling system for autumn weather. Taking the time to prepare the system for cooler weather ensures that your home will be safe and comfortable. Use these three tips to get your HVAC system ready for fall weather in the Great Lakes.

Change the Air Filter

The most important task for you to do this fall is to change your HVAC system’s air filter. According to the Department of Energy, a dirty air filter decreases HVAC energy efficiency by 5% to 15%. Check the air filter monthly, and replace it if it’s dirty. Our NATE-certified technicians can show you how to do this and tell you what size and type of filter is best for your system.

Clear Debris

Over the summer, debris from storms may have built up around the outdoor unit. As the season changes to fall, leaves will drop. Debris buildup decreases HVAC efficiency because the system isn’t able to exchange heat with the outdoor air. Wait for the HVAC system to stop cycling, then cut power to the system at the circuit breaker. Use your garden hose’s sprayer attachment to wash the outdoor housing, mow or trim overgrown vegetation, including tree branches.

Schedule a Tune-up to Prepare for Cool Weather

Preventive maintenance is essential for your HVAC system’s energy efficiency. We perform a multi-point inspection, clean all parts, lubricate moving parts, and measure the refrigerant level. We also run a system performance test. For furnaces, we make sure the flue is clear and the burner is working properly. Autumn is an ideal time for maintenance because it allows us to identify any issues and fix them before the first freezing temperatures arrive.
