3 Ways to Keep Your AC Energy Efficient In the Heat of the Summer

August 12, 2020

If you’re tired of seeing your Chicago, IL, home’s electricity bills get higher and higher every summer, you’re not alone. Chances are good that your AC’s energy efficiency could be the culprit in high electricity bills. Use these three tips to make your air conditioner more energy efficient and run smoothly all summer long.

Program the Thermostat

One of the simplest ways to make your AC more energy efficient during the peak heat of the summer is to program the thermostat. If you don’t already have a programmable thermostat, now is the time to have us install one. Programmable units allow you to set the temperature of your home for different times of the day. Increasing the temperature when you’re away from home reduces the number of cycles the air conditioner does, which saves you money. Instead of having to think about it every time you leave, the program automatically does it for you.

Keep Up With AC Maintenance

According to the Indoor Air Quality Association, preventive maintenance saves about 30% on your monthly cooling costs. The ideal time to schedule an AC tune-up is in the springtime. However, it’s not too late to schedule a tune-up now. Between tune-ups, you should check the AC’s air filter each month and replace it as soon as it’s dirty or at least every three months for increased efficiency and better cooling performance.

Clear Debris

The outdoor unit needs to have several feet of clearance around it so that the heat from your home can be released. Be sure to mow tall grass and keep shrubs, tree branches and other vegetation trimmed away from the unit. Clean the condensate line every month. An obstructed condensate line decreases AC efficiency. Vacuum the vents in your home. Remove the covers once per month to clean them.
